Candor Free Library

When children are out of school for the summer, they tend to lose ground in reading and math skills as they are no longer doing those tasks on a daily basis. Help your child avoid this summer slide by having them do fun reading and math activities on the computer during the summer.

Have your child join a
summer reading program.

A Summer Reading Program called A Universe of Stories will take place at the Candor Free Library this summer. Children are encouraged to read and win prizes. There will also be activities at the library for the children. See information on the right about the library hours, summer activities, etc. 

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program for students in Grades 1 - 6. Students who read 8 books and record them in their reading journal, will win a free book. Completed journals can be turned in any time between August 1 and August 31, 2019.

Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Challenge runs until September 6.  Log in your reading minutes to the Scholastic site and your child will be able to participate in a World Record challenge as well as earn digital prizes!

Chuck E. Cheese has a reading program where kids can earn 10 free Chuck E. Cheese tokens for reading every day for two weeks. This promotion is valid all year long. Please note that a food purchase is required to redeem 10 tokens.

Junie B Jones Reading Club - Sign up and receive a FREE starter kit that includes a copy of Junie B Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus, activity sheets, and a membership ID card while supplies last.

Candor's local library at 2 Bank Street, Candor, has many things worth checking out. Besides books, you may also take out Kindles, Nooks, DVDs, CDs, audio books, and Play-Aways . They have computers in the library that you may use for free, and free wireless available 24 hours a day, although you will have to access it from outside when the library is closed. You may borrow an Empire State Park Pass for unlimited day-use vehicle entry to most state parks. There are several programs for kids, also (see below).

In addition, with your library card, you may download and/or stream audiobooks and movies through the Hoopla app. Magazines are available for download through the Zinio app. Young children can watch animated books through Tumble Books. Anyone may practice languages with the Mango app. If you are looking for a specific book, you can borrow it through the Finger Lakes Library System directly from your computer. The book will be delivered to Candor where you can pick it up from the library.

A Summer Reading Program called A Universe of Stories will take place this summer.
There will be a new book for everyone who signs up as well as other prizes. The program starts July 8, but you can join anytime. Have fun with:
  • Kopernik Portable Planetarium at the Congregational Church on July 15 at 6:30 PM.
  • Peter and the Wolf woodwind quintet on July 17 at 4 PM at the library or the Congregational Church.
  • Space Camp at the library July 27 at 1:00 PM.
  • Dan the Snake Man at the library July 30, 6:30 PM.
  • Moreland the Magician at the library August 6 at 6:30 PM.
  • Cornell Spacecraft Planetary Imaging Facility will bring hands-on activities to the library August 21 in the evening at at time to be determined.

If your child likes building with Legos, Lego Club meets at the Candor Free Library at a time to be determined. Please call the library at 659-7258 to find out the time.  Art Splash classes take place every third Sunday at 1 PM for a fee of $5.

Here is also a list of places serving breakfast and/or lunch and sometimes dinner for kids 18 and under this summer.  Accompanying parents may also get a meal. There is no place in Candor, but there are places in Spencer and Owego. You can go to any location.
