When children are out of school for the summer, they tend to lose ground in reading and math skills as they are no longer doing those tasks on a daily basis. Help your child avoid this summer slide by having them do fun reading and math activities on the computer during the summer.

Candor Elementary Summer Library
On four Tuesday evenings this summer from 6:30 - 7:00 PM, students going into first - sixth grade for the 2018/19 school year may come to the Elementary School Library and check out two books. Books will be due in three weeks at the next summer library evening. They may be returned to an office dropbox earlier. Please use the visitor entrance. The dates are June 26, July17, August 7, and August 28.

In addition, from 7:00 - 7:30 on those evenings, students entering 1st-3rd grades are invited with an adult to stay for Story Spectacular. Preregistration is necessary

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program for students in Grades 1 - 6. Students who read 8 books and record them in their reading journal, will win a free book. Completed journals can be turned in any time between May 15 and September 3, 2018.

Chuck E. Cheese has a reading program where kids can earn 10 free Chuck E. Cheese tokens for reading every day for two weeks. This promotion is valid all year long. Please note that a food purchase is required to redeem 10 tokens.

Junie B Jones Reading Club - Sign up and receive a FREE starter kit that includes a copy of Junie B Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus, activity sheets, and a membership ID card while supplies last.

Candor's local library at 2 Bank Street, Candor, has many things worth checking out. Besides books, you may also take out Kindles, Nooks, DVDs, CDs, audio books, and Play-Aways . They have computers in the library that you may use for free, and free wireless available 24 hours a day, although you will have to access it from outside when the library is closed. You may borrow an Empire State Park Pass for unlimited day-use vehicle entry to most state parks. There are several programs for kids, also (see below).

In addition, with your library card, you may download and/or stream audiobooks and movies through the Hoopla app. Magazines are available for download through the Zinio app. Young children can watch animated books through Tumble Books. Anyone may practice languages with the Mango app. If you are looking for a specific book, you can borrow it through the Finger Lakes Library System directly from your computer. The book will be delivered to Candor where you can pick it up from the library.

A Summer Reading Program called Libraries Rock will take place this summer.
There will be a new book for everyone who signs up as well as other prizes. The program starts July 9, but you can join anytime. Have fun with fossils and rocks at our "Bones and Stones" program (time TBD, 7/14). We will be having performers including the famous pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow ( 6 PM, 7/19), and Australian themed music and story program called Digeridoo Down Under (6:30 PM, 7/24), and the popular Dan the Snake Man (time TBD, 8/8). If your child likes building with Legos, Lego Club meets at the Candor Free Library every Tuesday at 5:00 PM.  Art Splash classes take place every third Sunday at 1 PM for a fee of $5.

Candor is not listed here, but free lunches will now be served on Monday through Thursday from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Allen Memorial Baptist Church gym. Enter on Foundry Street and look for the signs.

Enjoy Friday night roller skating at Cass Park Rink in Ithaca from 7 - 9 PM. June 8 & 22; July 6 & 20; August 3, 17, 31; September 14 & 28. $7 fee includes skates.

Free movies at the Ross Park Zoo Amphitheater in Binghamton on June 23 at 9:00, July 28 at 8:45,
Aug. 25 at 8:00PM

Free movies at Stewart Park in Ithaca on Fridays in August starting at dusk. There will be food trucks and activities starting at 7:00 PM.
